New Guides Help Patients Better Manage Cancer Symptoms

A full series of 10 How to Manage your Cancer Symptoms - Guides for Patients are now available for cancer patients and their families across Ontario.

These easy to read guides provide evidence-based, practical information to help people with cancer and their loved ones better manage symptoms. The symptoms featured in the guides include those screened through the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS):

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Mouth Problems

The How to Manage Your Cancer Symptoms – Guides for Patients were created by Cancer Care Ontario in collaboration with a working group of clinicians, patients and patient education experts after a gap was identified in the availability of provincially standardized, comprehensive self-management information.

The guides are available for download in English and French at They have also been translated into Italian, Spanish, Tamil, Simplified and Traditional Chinese and will be available online in the coming months.
